You may be wondering how yoga can help your aging parent. Don’t worry, we don’t ask our seniors to stand on their heads or twist themselves into a pretzel!
So what is yoga exactly? Yoga is a 5000 year old practice that links the body, mind and breath through various breathing techniques, yoga postures and meditation. However, we’re unique because we offer something special: we do most of our classes sitting down! This makes it the perfect exercise for the elderly.
It’s called Chair Yoga. Simply put, we make it easy for anyone to practice yoga as all the exercises are modified so we can still get the same benefits while sitting. We know that many seniors would have trouble getting down to the floor (or getting back up!)
While sitting, seniors can do versions of twists, hip stretches, forward bends, and mild backbends. This gentle movement keeps the body strong and agile so that seniors feel better able to do the things they really want to do such as gardening, golfing, playing with grandchildren, and even simply getting out of bed with ease in the mornings.
Yoga’s benefits include increased fitness and management of chronic physical and mental health conditions. Did you know that seniors who practice yoga can improve their energy levels, cholesterol levels, bone strength, arthritis, blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and reduce pain? It can also help in the prevention of falls, obesity, diabetes, heart disease and strokes. Because yoga is a “mind-body” exercise it is also amazing for stress reduction and it can lead to better breathing ability.
